Focusing on fun, inclusive and accessible Speedway, the team has been built to support all facets of the sport, with drivers, clubs, and juniors at the forefront.

Speedway Australia Statement – Walcha Demo Derby Incident

Speedway Australia wishes to clarify recent media reports regarding an incident at the Walcha Motorcycle Rally Demo Derby.

The activity in question was not a speedway event, did not involve a speedway-registered race car, and did not take place at a Speedway Australia–sanctioned venue.

While we understand the public interest surrounding the incident, we want to reassure our community that this wasn’t a Speedway event in any capacity.

This unfortunate accident underscores the importance of Speedway Australia’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that all speedway activities take place in safe, professional, and well-regulated Speedway Australia approved venues nationwide, that meet a minimum standard of regulations, governance and safety.

Speedway Australia extends its sincere sympathies to those injured and affected by the incident.

SPEEDWAY AUSTRALIA STRENGTHENS NATIONAL TEAM WITH NEW GENERAL MANAGER AND KEY APPOINTMENTS.

Speedway Australia is pleased to announce several strategic appointments to its national office, strengthening its leadership, administrative support, and community connection as the sport continues to evolve and grow.

Matthew Casburn has been appointed General Manager and will commence in the coming weeks. With over 14 years of senior executive experience and an MBA, Matthew brings deep expertise in corporate services, financial strategy, IT, and governance. He has led high-performing teams across multiple sectors and is well-placed to lead Speedway Australia into its next phase of development.

Joining Matthew are two new administrative team members starting this Monday:

Leanne Miranda, appointed as Administration Assistant, brings extensive experience in aged care, HR, and office management. Most recently with AVEO Retirement Villages, she managed rostering, events, and financial administration. Leanne is passionate about speedway, her husband’s company has sponsored Murray Bridge Speedway, and her family business, National Karate Academies, has long supported the venue. Her involvement in the sport makes her an ideal fit for the team.

Petar Myers joins as Administration Officer with a diverse background in manufacturing, training, and systems support. He brings strong technical and administrative skills, and a lifelong connection to speedway. Petar was previously involved as a sedan scrutineer and club participant before stepping away to raise a family. Inspired by recent American speedway coverage, he’s thrilled to rejoin the sport in a meaningful way.

In addition, Angela Warren has rejoined Speedway Australia as Senior Administrative Officer. Angela previously worked with the organisation before relocating to Tasmania. She brings back a wealth of experience and in-depth operational knowledge, and will primarily work remotely from Tasmania while providing vital support across administrative functions. Her return brings valuable continuity and capability to the team.

These appointments represent Speedway Australia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its operations, enhancing service to stakeholders, and building a future-ready organisation that stays closely connected to the grassroots of the sport.

As part of recent staffing changes, Ben Bishop and Scott Jenkins have both moved on from the organisation, and we thank them for their contributions.

From pioneers of the early 20th century to global champions of the modern era, it recognises those who have left an enduring legacy across all disciplines – two wheels and four.

Motorsport has been at the heart of Australian innovation, competition and national pride for over 120 years. It is one of the few sports in which Australians have consistently reached the top on the world stage. Legends such as Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner headline the remarkable Australians who have become world champions – and household names.

Today, motorsport is one of Australia’s most significant sporting and economic contributors:

Criteria for induction in the Hall of Fame

Potential inductees must be Australian citizens or residents or have held a competition licence issued by a Federation.

In all cases, long service is not sufficient on its own to qualify a person as a potential inductee.

Competitor Members

A potential inductee will be an Individual or a Team who have demonstrated exceptional achievement by competing at the highest level of their chosen motorsport discipline – at either national or international significance.

To be eligible, they must have retired from full-time competition at the elite level, though they may still participate on a part-time basis.

Competitor Members will be classified into one of the following sub-categories:

Motorcycle Road Racing
Motocross
Motorcycle Off Road – Enduro
Motorcycle Speedway

Special Members

The Special Member category recognises individuals – other than competitors – who have made an extraordinary contribution to motorsport at the highest levels in Australia or internationally. These individuals will have demonstrated excellence and outstanding achievement in roles that directly support motorsport participants.

To be eligible for induction as a Special Member of the Hall of Fame, an individual must:

Have made a sustained and exceptional contribution to motorsport or a specific discipline within it at a national or international level.
Have operated in a non-competitive role, with achievements that have directly or indirectly elevated the performance, professionalism, safety, recognition or status of the sport or its participants.
Be recognised by peers and stakeholders as having had a profound and lasting impact on motorsport or the specific discipline within it in which they were involved.
Have completed the majority of their significant contributions, noting that individuals currently active in their roles may still be considered where their impact is deemed extraordinary.

Special Members are expected to be:

Initiators or game changers who have influenced the direction of motorsport or a specific discipline within it;
Innovators whose work has been widely adopted across the sport or a specific discipline within it; or
Leaders or creators of competitions or programs that have brought international recognition to Australian motorsport or a specific discipline within it.

Fields of endeavour which would be considered suitable as contributions to the performances of competitors or to the development and status of Australian motorsport include:

AUSTRALIAN SPEEDWAY HONOURS ITS HIGHEST ACHIEVERS AS EMOTIONS OVERFLOW

Some of the toughest names in Australian Speedway racing struggled to keep their emotions from overflowing on Saturday night at the Australian Speedway Awards and Hall of Fame Gala Dinner at Brisbane’s Star Casino on Saturday night.

Maryborough Queensland based sedan racer Joel Berkley was awarded the top honour of Overall Sportsperson of the Year.

Berkley’s award was the crescendo of a night brimming with every emotion, inducting five legends into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame, awarding six industry awards and six competitor awards before a 200 strong live audience and livestreamed on ClayPerView thanks My Race Pass.

Berkley’s “Sportsperson of the Year” honour backed up his “Sedan Competitor of the Year” win, while decorated Sprintcar racer James McFadden was hailed as Open Wheel Competitor of the Year, while the Perth Motorplex retained the title of “Track of the Year” for three consecutive years.

The night held some emotional surprises for some recipients, with Marshal/Official/Volunteer of the Year Adam Currie in disbelief with his award, while Junior Competitor of the Year Harrison Beres won a new legion of fans with his likable larrikin acceptance interview that kept MC Bennie Bishop guessing what the young West Australian was going to say next!

“Every year this awards event seems to find a new gear, and tonight was another level again of demonstrating the sport at it’s best, and seeing just how much it means to the 15,000 licensees across the country,” a spoksesperson said.

“The night had everything, from the Hall of Famers revealing hilarious tales of the golden era right through to a touching tribute honouring the memory of more than 100 speedway identities who the sport lost in the past season.”

Tickets to the 2025 Australian Speedway Hall of Fame and Awards Gala Dinner at Brisbane’s Star Casino on Saturday June 28 are now on sale.

The annual event will welcome five new names to the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame, along with announcing the finalists and the winners of the Australian Speedway Industry Awards including Innovation/Promotional Item/Event of the Year, Track of the Year, Most Improved Track of the Year, Media Person of the Year, Photographer of the Year and the coveted Official/Marshall/Volunteer of the Year.

The night crescendos with the Competitor Awards across the Junior, Karting, Modified, Sedan and Open Wheel divisions, before announcing the Overall Competitor of the Year.

The brand new Brisbane Star Casino will serve pre-dinner drinks from 5:30pm before a three course meal and drinks package for the event from 6:30.

BRI Ferrier provides an update on N.A.S.R. Incorporated (Administrators Appointed)

MEDIA RELEASE

Following their appointment on 19 February 2025 as Voluntary Administrators of N.A.S.R. Incorporated (Administrators Appointed) the national governing body for speedway racing in Australia trading as Speedway Australia (the Association), BRI Ferrier Principals Shaun Boyle and Giovanni Carrello today provide an update on the Administration.

With the support of its committed staff, the Association is trading on a business-as-usual basis during the Administration, with minimal disruption to the activities and services provided by the Association.

The Association continues to oversee the provision of racing permits and licenses, and the Administrators have been working closely with the Association’s insurer to ensure its insurance policies are being maintained and/or renewed as required.

It is expected that the Administration period will provide sufficient time for the Administrators to resolve a number of matters necessary for the Association to continue serving the speedway community in Australia in future.

The Administrators will provide further updates at the appropriate time.

SPEEDWAY LEGEND INDUCTED INTO THE AUSTRALIAN MOTORSPORT HALL OF FAME

Legendary speedway engine and chassis builder John Sidney has today been inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame as part of the Formula One Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 festivities at Melbourne's Albert Park.

Inducted into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame in 2008, John's reputation in the wider motorsport industry transcended speedway racing, becoming a valued advisor in multiple motorsport disciplines, establishing him as a worthy inclusion in the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame.

John Sidney Racing claimed three World Series Sprintcars titles, two Australian Sprintcar Championships and two Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic victories with Max Dumesny, all sporting the famous OTR (Oval Track Racing Equipment & Development) chassis and engines between 1991 and 1998.

John was humbled by the induction, admitting he felt a little "out of place" amongst such decorated names in the Australian motorsport industry.

"I didn't realise how big a deal this was!" he laughed. "I'm not a high profile person at all, so when I look at these people that I'm here with, it's very humbling."

"I was always pretty intense at races. I was really focussed because we were on such a steep learning curve in the 80's. But it was the winning that drove us. We didn't like running second, but I don't think we would've achieved the things we did without Max."

John was surrounded by family and friends for the induction, including Hall of Famer Max Dumesny who sat with John throughout the ceremony, hosted by Greg Rust.

John was inducted alongside the Australian Women’s International Six Day Enduro Team of Jemma Wilson, Jessica Gardiner and Tayla Jones, eighteen times national Karting champion David Sera, eight times Top Fuel Motorcycle drag racing champion Chris Matheson , and circuit racing legend, the late Leo Geoghegan.

In behalf of the entire Australian Speedway community, congratulations John on your induction, and thankyou for your immeasurable contribution to our sport.

“DREAM TEAM” THE KEY TO NAPA SPEEDWAY SUCCESS

The overwhelming success of the NAPA Speedway in the City event in Adelaide last week has stirred a flood of fresh interest in the sport, triggering speculation on how the peak body can capitalize.

Speedway Australia CEO Darren Tindal attributed the success of the event to a highly qualified crew that were hand selected to lead their respective departments, which paved the way for an amazing event that established speedway on Australia’s biggest motorsport stage.

“The vision of the VAILO Adelaide 500 team was extremely bold and brave, so our role was to assist with the safety requirements of the track and to supply them the names of some of the best people in the nation in their respective fields to give this amazing idea the best chance to be a success, and we’re so proud of the “dream team” we put forward, because they interpreted the vision of the VAILO Adelaide 500 team and executed it brilliantly.”

A spokesperson for the VAILO Adelaide 500 echoed Tindal’s comments, praising the different parties for the unity shown to join forces for an amazing outcome.

“This is a major testament to what can be achieved when multiple organisations unify with a common goal to entertain race fans from multiple racing disciplines.”

“This first year was a “proof of concept” event, where we had to prove that the demand was high enough to justify the investment from the South Australian Motor Sport Board, and the overwhelming response has been that this was an excellent initiative and a great addition to the already amazing VAILO Adelaide 500 entertainment package.”

Sprintcars SA President Adam Currie was quick to acknowledge the contribution of the team “on the ground” but praised the core of the VAILO Adelaide 500 team for what was achieved behind the scenes.

“We had the best in the business as our hands and feet on the ground to make the events happen, but I don’t think anyone will ever know just how hard the core team from the Adelaide 500 worked to make this a reality. They literally moved mountains behind the scenes and anyone passionate about speedway racing in Australia owes them a debt of gratitude for what they’ve done for our sport.”

According to the Speedway Australia CEO, the focus shifts now to how the sport of Speedway can capitalize on the increased interest thanks to the remarkable platform of almost 260,000 people that the VAILO Adelaide 500 provided.

“We can’t afford to just rest on what’s been achieved this last weekend now. We’ve locked in some meetings this week with key figures who we hope can help us take advantage of the amazing response we’ve had and help us steer the sport into the next level of profile.”

“The future is bright, but we’re going to have to strengthen our relationships and elevate our expectations to make the most of this platform we’ve been given, but we’re confident we have the right people in our corner to help us get there.”

EMOTIONS FLOW AS SPEEDWAY STARS HONOURED AT ANNUAL AWARDS

Legends and emerging stars graced the stage of the Melbourne RACV City Club Level 17 Ballroom last night for the 2024 Australian Speedway Awards and Hall of Fame Induction.

Over 200 guests attended the gala dinner event that was also livestreamed free on Clayperview, opening with the induction of five new Australian Speedway Hall of Fame inductees, before announcing seven Industry Awards and six Competitor of the Year Awards.

Speedway Australia CEO Darren Tindal labelled the event a resounding success, applauding the efforts of those who travelled extensive distances to champion their family and colleagues.

Family and friends of the recipients travelled from all over the nation to be present with their family and friends who were receiving awards which is a testament to just how much these awards mean.”

“Our staff have worked extremely hard to lift the bar again this year and the feedback from attendees has been outstanding, but there was a common thread in the feedback, where a lot of people felt a sense of unity in the room which is a positive sign for the future as we continue to build this sport together.”
